Closing Date For Applications:

£11.44 - £11.88 per hour depending on role and experience + gratuities + service charge (see below for details)

Various roles and contracts available, including full-time, part-time, and casual

  • With some exciting projects on the horizon, we are currently recruiting for a variety of roles across our Grounds and Gardens teams. The two departments each have their own distinct remit and responsibilities, but they work very closely together and it's not unusual to find our gardeners helping out our grounds team, and vice versa!
  • If you have a background in Grounds or Gardens, then that’s fantastic!
  • If you don’t have experience, so long as you are eager to learn then full training can be given. We are less focussed on what you have done in the past and more interested to find out what you can do.
  • Regardless of your career history or qualifications, if you like working outdoors, enjoy being part of a team, and take pride in a job well done then we want to hear from you.
  • Rather than list all of the possible roles that we are recruiting for across our outdoor teams, we thought it would be better to tell you a little about the two departments and then you can tell us where you think you might fit in. And if you don’t know, that’s ok too! Just let us know which team(s) you might be interested in and we can look at matching your skillset to a position.

The grounds at Skibo

  • The 8,000-acre Skibo estate encompasses not only the castle and formal gardens but also parkland, lochs, woods and moorland. Stretching from the shoreline of the Dornoch Firth to a height of 1,135ft to the north, it is one of the most biologically diverse estates in Scotland.
  • The work of our grounds teams is as varied as the estate. They care for Skibo's woodlands in accordance with the Club's woodland management plan, undertaking brush and scrub clearance, grass mowing, and fence construction and repair.
  • They also maintain and improve the estate infrastructure, including its roads, water supplies, drains, as well as a variety of general estate maintenance projects.

The gardens at Skibo

  • The Skibo gardens boast a wide variety of horticulture, from expansive lawns and arboretums to greenhouses and ornamental flower beds.
  • Our beautiful walled garden contains rows of stunning flowers as well as produce from apples and plums to peas, salad leaves, and radishes, all for use in the club's kitchens.
  • The Victorian glasshouses boast crops of tomatoes, cucumbers, chillies, micro-herbs and courgettes.
  • Sweeping down from the castle's terrace are the formal gardens, with their displays of roses and lavender, as well as herbaceous borders crowded with seasonal blooms
  • Our gardeners tend to all areas of the estate's formal grounds, keeping them beautifully well-kept and tidy by undertaking a wide variety of tasks, from grass cutting to cultivation, and planting to pruning.

Who we are looking for

  • You're a team player with good communication skills who is dependable, committed, and capable of working both alone and with others.
  • You're eager to step up and assist your colleagues, both in your immediate team and across the many departments at Skibo.
  • Though not essential, spraying certificates, experience operating a chainsaw, or qualifications in a relevant subject will be useful.
  • You're keen to progress your skills through training and development here at the Club.

  • 33 days annual leave (pro rata)

"I started at The Carnegie Club as an Apprentice Greenkeeper back in 1999, and now as Grounds & Golf Manager I oversee our Grounds, Greenkeeping and Gardens teams. Skibo is a great place to work, with plenty of opportunity for career development and progression. What I'm looking for isn't necessarily people who have worked in these departments before - what's important is a positive attitude, a good work ethic and a genuine passion for being outdoors."

Chris Mailley, Head of Grounds and Golf
