With individual temperature and lighting controls in the rooms, it’s easy to lie back and relax as the train speeds through the Home Counties. During the summer months, early risers can even catch a glimpse of the majestic Stirling Castle at dawn as the train snakes north towards Perth, and beyond to the beautiful Cairngorms National Park. ‘Make sure you enjoy breakfast in the lounge car as the wonderful Highland scenery goes by,’ advises Ryan Flaherty, Serco’s guest experience director at Caledonian Sleeper. Forward-thinking passengers can time it just right as the train is going through the pass at Drumochter, into Dalwhinnie. It’s hard to think of a more magical start to the day than watching deer bounding beyond the grand lounge windows as you tuck into scrambled eggs and bacon. Speaking of food, the seasonal menu on board is provided by RSF Scotland, who source 92 per cent of the food within 50 miles of their base in Dingwall. Not only does this guarantee fresh produce with traceable provenance, it means that guests can begin their culinary tour of Scotland before they’ve even stepped off the train. And the journey is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. Outside, the greens, browns and purples of Scotland’s landscape Left: early risers on the Caledonian Sleeper can catch a glimpse of Scotland’s Stirling Castle from the carriage rush past as if captured by a painter in vivid brush strokes, the straths and lochs are carved by mountain streams and ice, there are thatched cottages and slate-roofed houses, farms and bothies, Highland cattle and Blackface sheep. The beauty of taking the slow route is that all the clichés about the journey mattering more than the destination really come into their own. All too soon, the train passes Kingussie, Aviemore and Carrbridge before arriving at the Guest Service Centre in Inverness. It’s time to head to Skibo Castle, where familiar Carnegie Club comforts await. On reflection, perhaps the best way to convey the Caledonian Sleeper experience is through the words of Scotland’s Own Poet… My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here, My heart’s in the Highlands, a-chasing the deer; Chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe, My heart’s in the Highlands, wherever I go.
